In a Sea of Stars

Crayn, The Planet of Rebirth

DM: Matt

The crew landed in Ceris, a city on Crayn, and were met by a very angry goblin that tried to wave them away. Marros knew the goblin, but was still denied access. With a little intimidation from Slyrin, the goblin revealed that the Iron Hammers (a powerful outerlands Guild) was spying on the Ring of the Labyrinth (a smaller merc group Marros is affiliated with). Having the permission to park, the group entered the market, but split up to do some shopping. Marros also goes to look for work with the R.o.t.L., while Mella learns what she can about both the Ring and the Iron Hammers.

Eventually, the group meets up again in an inn, the Sleeping Fox. Marros tells the group that he has picked up a job to investigate a local bandit group. Tensions escalate between Slyrin, who relishes the chance to kill more elves, and Mahko, who expresses religious concerns about being contracted to kill again. Eventually the whole group agrees on the job. After Mella reveals her concerns about Slyrin to Marros, the group heads out.

During the trip, the gang is ambushed on the road. Thought they initially believe they have found their bandits, the ambushers reveal themselves to be members of the Resistance that is fighting the Dragon Empire. They declare that they plan to eliminate the bandits in order to garner more local support. Despite a rehashing of the earlier tension between Slyrin and Mahko, the group continues on, leaving the Resistance in the dust.

The group soon arrives at the crater that holds their targets. After some planning, the group splits up. Mella and Lenis run an initial fly-over, while Mahko descends into the crater in preparation for the infiltration. When Mella and Lenis return, Lenis flies Marros to a support on the aqueduct, where Marros takes out an enemy sniper. Slyrin takes up a post on the top of the aqueduct, while Mella and Lenis descend into the crater.

With everyone in position, Mella distracts the guards while Mahko moves to knock one out. Though he messes it up, Mella and Slyrin work together to cover him, allowing Mahko to pull the guard to his hiding place with Mella and Lenis. As Mella prepares to enter the unconscious guard’s mind, Mahko takes on the guard’s appearance and takes his place to gather more information. Deciding to work from his post, Slyrin begins to triangulate the position of any other communicators.

Uh… THERE WAS A FIREFIGHT! (In other words, we skipped the fight. People died, just not us.)

Following the success of the mission, the team returns to the city. Mahko departs to partake in drink, while Marros collects the payment and a potential ally. Meanwhile, Slyrin listens to Mella’s story in exchange for shopping help. After a brief meeting with Marros, the trio goes shopping. Marros then guides the new guy Floyd and Giselle to the Sleeping Fox while Mella and Slyrin return to the Firefly with their purchases. However, once on board, they discover some dark magic has begun working on Dirk.

Investigation turns up little information, so the team agrees to quarantine Dirk. Mahko arrives in time to direct Dirk to a cryo tube instead, then argues with Slyrin about their next course of action: Slyrin wants to make a dangerous trip to acquire a stardrive for the Firefly, while Mahko knows of a doctor that could save Dirk. Their talks grow heated while Mella probes Dirk’s mind to discover the influence of a dark god. When she reveals this fact, Slyrin threatens to throw everyone but Mella and Lenis off of the ship. Near-violence ensues, but Slyrin eventually backs down.

Mahko lends Mella his payment from the job as collateral for his and Dirk’s continued ride. Marros, however, expresses a desire to leave. With some prodding from Mella, Slyrin takes off with Marros still aboard, but the half-elf manages to slip off. He is left on Crayn as the rest of the team heads for the rumored stardrive.

Space, Episode 2: Vlagstolf to Crayn

DM: Matt

On the journey to Crayn to find work, Mahko takes time to get to know everyone on the crew (with the exception of Slyrin). He shares his story with Marros, and learns his in return. He apologizes to Giselle for hitting on her, then meets Lenis. After emotional moments and the revelation of some secrets surrounding the summoning siblings (with intermittent humor), Mahko, Mella, Lenis, and Marros (who walks in halfway through) all make a pact to protect each other.

A few nights later, Mella succeeds in infiltrating Slyrin’s dreams… or maybe “nightmares” is a better word. After several terribly and horrifying scenes, Mella discovers that Slyrin is being either possessed or influenced by a dark and terrible presence, somehow related to his gun.

Dirk spends the journey in a deep depression, rarely leaving the room even to eat.

When they reach Crayn, Lenis is finally successful in achieving human form.

Vlagstolf, The Frozen Ore

DM: Liv (briefly Nolan)

The group arrives at Vlagstolf, a supposed drop-off for Dirk, Marros, and Kuronagi. However, soon after arriving it becomes clear that other plans have been made. The crew is ambushed by Empire forces that Slyrin tipped off, though they betray their mole by ordering that Slyrin, Dirk, and Marros turn themselves in. Dirk, Marros, Lenis, and Kuronagi fight off the soldiers as Mella and Slyrin manage to pull the Firefly out of the Empire’s clutches. The ship crash-lands some distance away, but sustains little damage and the crew is unharmed.

Picking themselves up, Mella goes into the markets of Vlagstolf with Dirk and Marros to find a replacement part for the engine (which was broken in the escape plan). They find the shop of an old acquaintance of Mella’s – or rather, the daughter of an old acquaintance. They ask for her help, as they need to gain entrance to the underground black market. She finally agrees, which prompts Dirk to contact the Varden. Failing to use the conventional entrance, the trio finds an alternate path through the sewers and heads for the underground. In the tunnels, they force a man to give them access to the tunnels, but are attacked by metallic slimes on the way there. They easily dispose of the beasts.

Back at the Firefly, there is no rest for the wicked as Slyrin must deal with Kuronagi-gone-Mr.-Hyde. Despite the twitchy man’s monstrous form, Slyrin puts him down easily. But soon thereafter, Slyrin is met with Frozen Suns gang members investigating the crash. They fight, but Slyrin easily defeats them. He scares a survivor into warding off any further suspicion, then warns the other three that Frozen Suns are headed toward the market.

Receiving Slyrin’s message, Dirk and Marros wait outside as Mella goes looking in the market for the part. However, Frozen Suns members soon show up, forcing Marros and Dirk into a swift but bloody fight. Once the mercenaries are dead, the pair enters the market, where Marros saves Mella from mysterious attackers. Finding the necessary part, the trio flees back to the ship, only to be ambushed by Varden members. Dirk is excommunicated, but the assailants are easily stopped. As Dirk begins to descend into depression, a third assassin appears, but quickly moves to help the group, revealing himself to be an old friend of Dirk’s.

With Mahko’s help, the now-four return to the Firefly. Though Mahko initially hides his boarding from Slyrin, he approaches the pilot and secures passage as Dirk’s friend. As Mahko formally meets the gang, Mella installs the drive core into the engine and Slyrin wastes no time taking off from Vlagstolf.

Space, Part 1: Evverus to Vlagstolf

DM: Ryan

Taking off from Evverus, most of the crew finds space in their new home: Dirk in a passenger room, Marros in crew quarters, Slyrin in the captain’s quarters, Mella in the engine room, Lenis in the cargo bay, and Giselle in the infirmary.

Slyrin takes care to avoid contact for most of the journey, except when approached by Mella and Dirk. He spends his time improving his bullets and keeping an eye on the ship’s inhabitants.

Dirk discovers a love for cooking and a curiosity for chess as he interacts with the crew. He is eager, but also naive. He spends the beginning of the trip with Mella and Lenis, playing chess.

Marros gets to know the crew, but still prefers to spend his time either alone or in the infirmary with Giselle.

Mella reminisces about her last visit to Vlagstolf, but otherwise chooses to be with Lenis. Similarly, Lenis spends most of his time with Mella, though also enjoys the relaxed company of Dirk and Marros at meals.

The trip becomes interesting when an escape pod embeds itself in the side of the Firefly, dumping a disoriented and babbling Kuronagi Arix into the cargo bay. Most of the group is startled by the newcomer and rush to help him, while Slyrin seals himself into the cargo bay to prevent any further damage to the ship’s hull. Kuronagi recovers, but continues his incomprehensible babble as he discovers his own amnesia.

That night, Mella infiltrates Marros’s dreams. She sees a scene from Marros’s happier days, then views a slideshow of Marros’s life in pictures, up to the shot that changed his life.

The next day, the crew lands on Vlagstolf, though they do not meet a warm welcome…

Evverus, The Verdant Beginning

I know the entire campaign is written out in text, but this is just to get a basic overview of what happened on each planet, should this campaign last us for our whole college careers or beyond.

DM: Ryan

Evverus was the planet that served as the meeting place for our motley crew. It’s surface is a dense forest, populated with elves, while below the surface, a thriving black market operates in an elaborate tunnel system.

Slyrin came to the planet hunting elves, then stumbled upon an advanced stronghold in the woods. Thinking there could be valuable weapons or intel inside, he slaughtered the guards and broke into the facility. As a sadistic afterthought, Slyrin blows up the elevator from the surface into the heart of the compound, trapping himself and his prey.

Some distance away, Dirk and Marros both traveled to the marketplace to kill Kvar, a local slave trader, though for different reasons: Dirk was sent on a mission by the Varden, and Marros was hired by a girl named Giselle. Marros succeeded, only to discover that he had killed a double. The two met and fought off the slaver’s mercenaries, only to see the real Kvar ride away on a motorcycle.

Slyrin investigated the facility and he found Mella being held captive. Slyrin freed her, only for the two to be attacked by Kvar’s men. They fought back and won, then found Giselle, Marros’s employer, in the next room. She enlisted the others’ help in killing Kvar. After fighting a few more guards, they take a lift to the hallway outside Kvar’s office. Mella summons Lenis and the few guards here are quickly disposed of.

Marros and Dirk chase Kvar, and they too find the compound, but the elevator has been sabotaged. They find a ladder that enters the facility, but almost immediately run into guards themselves. They dispatch of them, then find the back door to Kvar’s main office.

As if by some strange divine (DM) intervention, both groups burst into the room where Kvar is hiding. They work together to kill him, though Slyrin takes the time to nearly kill Marros in the process. After a few tense words, they all agree to escape using the Firefly that Slyrin claimed on the way in. The group escapes Evverus, but not before learning that Marros and Dirk are now wanted for the killing of Kvar.
